6 Things you need to do to get your public speaking career started

Becoming a public speaker can set you up as an industry leader or get you in contact with executives who can help you further your business and build your network. While public speaking is certainly advantageous, you cannot become a successful speaker overnight. Consider implementing these tech PR tips to help you get started.

 

  1. Create a portfolio. When you try to line up speaking engagements, you may need to give proof of your previous work. You can't necessarily do this when you first start, but you should start building your portfolio now, so when bigger opportunities present themselves you are ready to take the leap. This technology PR tactic gives you the tools you need to market yourself as a public speaker. Your portfolio can include videos of your performances and testimonials from people who have heard you speak.
  2. Start small. You have your eyes set on a new goal, so it may be hard for you to scale back your dreams. However, you need to start with small, local events before anyone big is going to hire you. Try setting up events with your local Chamber of Commerce. If that doesn't work, you can start your speaking career by hosting groups yourself.
  3. Consider your expertise. Just because you want to become a public speaker does not mean anyone out there will want to listen to you.
