Why our PR team supports nonprofits

December 23, 2014

Few things remind me to recognize my own gratitude like the coming New Year. December can be an overwhelming time for businesses and retailers, and though I’m always impressed by the pros who make it seem effortless, I welcome the winter holiday season for the chance it creates to step back, sign off and appreciate what really matters. This feeling of gratitude is one reason many people get involved with their communities and give back during this season – philanthropists and nonprofits give and receive more donations between October and December each year, and recent years have seen Giving Tuesday help drive those statistics to a viral status.

The Metis team supports its community throughout the year by working hands-on with service projects in the Boston area and contributing company-matched donations to causes and organizations that do incredible work on a national and global scale. If you’re looking to join the holiday spirit of giving, below are some of our team’s favorite organizations to support.

Support for our neighbors in Boston

  • The Action for Boston Community Development (BostonABCD) provides antipoverty support to low-income residents of the Greater Boston Area.
  • Building Impact brings events to companies’ break rooms so employees can dedicate time in their workday to writing cards, making blankets and sending letters to people in need.
  • Rosie’s Place provides emergency services for women in Boston who face poverty, domestic violence and homelessness.
  • The St. Francis House offers food and guest services, tutoring and job preparation, and housing advocacy to support its guests, who deal with poverty, homelessness and health issues.
  • Peace and Paws Dog Rescue in New Hampshire rescues dogs and places them into their forever, loving homes.

Building futures around the globe

  • The Courtney E. Metzger Scholarship Fund was established by friends and family of a Northeastern University student who passed away in 2000. The fund grants an annual college scholarship to a senior at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School in New Jersey.
  • The Ferguson Municipal Public Library provides Ferguson, Missouri community members and family with a safe place and an encouraging environment for education.
  • The Fugees Family, Inc. blends education, leadership and soccer to provide child survivors of war with the support and structure of a school environment to help them realize their potential.

Preparing for the unexpected

  • Donations to the Boston-based Dana Farber Cancer Institute can be personalized to honor an individual patient, line of research, or even a specific doctor.
  • The Griffin’s Friends Marathon Challenge raises funds to support patients at Baystate Children’s Hospital in western Massachusetts by hosting holiday parties, trips to stage performances and sporting events, and outpatient entertainment to encourage positivity and relaxation.
  • The Mayo Clinic is sought out by patients across the globe for care from its leading healthcare professionals and breaking research.
  • The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City is renowned for its research, but also its personalized levels of patient care.
  • Relay for Life brings teams together for overnight fundraising to add a sense of community and a rich experience to the act of donating time, energy and funds to cancer research.
